How many hours to study for UPSC daily?

One of the main questions every UPSC aspirant asks is “How many hours do I need to study?” Preparing for the UPSC is a long journey that requires discipline, consistency and smart planning. First, understand how many hours we need to study. Don’t go for 16 to 18 hours of study, as it scares students; always focus on 6 to 10 hours daily with quality.

Below is a guide to study and manage the UPSC exam:

  1. Hours

On average, it requires 6 to 10 hours a day. Start slowly, building consistency over 4 hours daily as a beginner. The human brain can only maintain deep focus for a limited time; after that, it gets tired and cannot focus. Always have a rule to study from 6 to 10 hours. It is crucial to understand that effective studying is not about sitting with books all day long; it is about maintaining concentration.

        2. Quality study

Quality always outweighs quantity. Studying straight 10 hours with frequent distractions is less effective than 4 hours of intense, deep and forced studying. Don’t get distracted by the phone for every 10 min, being focused straight is very important. Don’t just read and go; try to summarise each topic after you finish reading. Try to focus on solving the practice questions.

3. Divide the hours

Let’s assume that if you are studying for 8 hours, never go straight for long hours. It is important to take breaks in between hours for physical activity, eating, and sleeping. Without a plan, but continuously studying without rest can lead to fatigue and loss of concentration. A healthy lifestyle helps you focus and stay motivated through the journey.

Break the hours.

  • Morning time (3 hours): This is a good time for tough subjects or for a new topic.
  • Afternoon time(2 hours): Use this time for newspaper reading or browsing the internet for the latest news.
  • Evening (2 hours): Focus on practising papers or revision writing.
  • Night(1 hour): Review the whole day that you studied.

4. Full-time employee or a student

Not everyone will have the same amount of time.

Student: You can easily aim for 8 to 10 hours daily, focused, but make sure to take breaks in between, like every one hour, 10 minutes of break.

Full-time Employee: You get very little time, 3 to 4 hours daily, so make sure you are focused without any distractions. Then make up for 10 to 12 hours on the weekend.

  1. “Me time”

With the long hours of studying never forgets oneself. Your daily schedule must include: sleep, which helps your brain to remember, physical quality 30 minutes of walking always helps to reduce your stress and have family & friends time to be motivated.

     6. Never compare

Every aspirant is different; some can study long hours, and a few can study in short hours. Stop comparing yourself with others, focus on what works best for you.

Conclusion:

There is no fixed number of hours to study UPSC. Some take more than 10 hours daily, while other takes 6 hours. The most important thing is to finish your daily target. With the right guidance from VSHRESHTA, you can plan your preparation more effectively and stay on track.

Your success doesn’t determine how many hours you used. How effectively you use these hours.
